Environment for VFX
8-Week Intensive Mentorship

A private mentorship for 3D artists who want to break into VFX environments. You leave with one finished environment shot built to the standards of ILM, Weta, DNEG or Framestore, ready for your reel.

4 seats maximum 8 weeks 1-on-1 + group All levels above 3D basics

What's included

  • 1h30 of one-on-one sessions per week where we review your work and answer technical and artistic questions.
  • Weekly group session (max 4 students) on skills that translate to any software and any company.
  • Feedback at every stage throughout the week, not just at the end of a module.
  • The full pipeline: Houdini, Maya, SpeedTree, ZBrush, Substance Painter and Nuke, covering everything from reference and concept pick to final pixel in comp.
  • A mentor who still does this work daily: 9 years at top VFX studios, and 3 of 7 past students went on to land at major studios.

Who this is for

You have the 3D basics and you want to make it into VFX environment work. You're tired of courses, and you want real feedback from someone who works to that standard every day.

Week by week

The curriculum

Defining the intent of the project. How to read a reference beyond the surface: the visual language of shapes, composition and mood. Building a moodboard that drives every technical decision that follows. Framing, depth, focal point: how to make an image say something in three seconds. Placing elements in space to serve the composition, plus the most common mistakes in demo reels and how to fix them.

How to optimize geometry to be clean, lightweight and production-ready without sacrificing visual quality. The difference between form follows function and function follows form: understanding when the shape is driven by purpose and when the purpose is driven by the shape, and how that distinction changes every modeling decision you make.

Organizing a scene properly from the start: naming conventions, hierarchy, smart scattering, and what studios expect from a deliverable file. Real-world observation for scattering: how to study the way nature and urban environments actually distribute elements, and translate that into believable, non-repetitive scatter patterns.

Introduction to the real production pipeline. Why Solaris and USD have become the industry standard, and how to set them up correctly, even on a personal project.

Substance, procedural textures and visual consistency across assets. How to use noises to break up tileables and avoid the repetitive look that immediately reveals a lack of experience. Making everything feel like it belongs to the same world.

Reading and reproducing real light. Three-point lighting, HDRI, ambient light, and how lighting completely changes the read of a scene. The semiology of light: what each lighting choice communicates emotionally and narratively, and how to use it consciously to reinforce the intent of the project.

Taking a clean render and pushing it to a final image. Color grading, atmosphere, integration, and what studios actually look for in a comp.

Each student presents their finished shot for group feedback. Then: how to present your work on ArtStation and LinkedIn to maximize visibility.

About

I make the shots. Then I help you make yours.

I'm Marc-Antoine Beineix, a Senior Environment Generalist with nine years inside top VFX studios. Everything I know came from building environments under a real deadline, and from the reels I've since helped other artists build, shot by shot, week by week.

Most artists aren't missing talent. They're missing production context: how a scene is actually organized, why an image reads as amateur instead of realistic, and which decision in week one can impact you down the line.

So I teach the way I wish someone had taught me. Real pipeline, real feedback on your image every single week, no filler. Three of my first seven students went on to land at major studios.

Questions

Before you apply.

Artists who already have the 3D basics and want to break into VFX environment work. You should be comfortable navigating your DCC of choice. If you've never opened Houdini or Maya, start with the tutorials first, because the mentorship moves fast.

Fill in a short application, then we book a call to check the mentorship fits your level and goals. If it's a match, I send you a secure Stripe payment link. Your seat is confirmed once the payment goes through.

Yes. Pay €1,300 in full, or 3 monthly payments of €450 (€1,350 total). The plan stops automatically after the third payment.

A course is a recording. This is four people, eight weeks, and a mentor looking at your shot every week. The value isn't the information. It's someone telling you exactly what's wrong with your image and why, before you've spent three months polishing the wrong thing.

We cover Houdini, Maya, SpeedTree, ZBrush, Substance Painter and Nuke. You don't need all of them. Apprentice, indie and learning editions are fine, and the principles transfer to whatever your studio uses. We'll agree on your setup during onboarding.

Plan for a minimum of 5h a week. The sessions themselves are a few hours; the rest is you building the shot. Students who treat it like a part-time job finish with something reel-worthy.

Group sessions are live and scheduled around the cohort's time zones. They're recorded, so a missed week isn't fatal, but your one-on-one time is booked directly with me and can be rescheduled.

No, and be suspicious of anyone who does. What I guarantee is a finished shot built to studio standard, honest feedback on where your work stands, and a clear read on what's still between you and a hire. Three of my first seven students went on to land roles at major studios.

Because feedback stops being useful past that. Four people means I actually know your shot, your habits and your weak spots.

After checkout you get a receipt from Stripe and an email with your download link. Lost it? Email me with your receipt and I'll resend it.
